The Hotel Collection Blog: The History of Afternoon Tea

17 May 2017 by Kate

A blog commissioned by The Hotel Collection and The Billesley Manor Hotel about the history of afternoon tea.

With dainty finger sandwiches, delicate little cakes and delicious scones with lashings of jam and cream, there’s nothing quite so quintessentially British as afternoon tea. As a nation, afternoon tea has been one of our favourite pastimes since the early 19th century. But the popularity of TV shows like The Great British Bake Off in recent years has given this great British culinary tradition a whole new lease of life.

The British aristocracy is said to have introduced the tradition of afternoon tea. In 1840 Anna Russell, the 7th Duchess of Bedford started to dine on bread, butter and tea in the afternoon, as a bridge between breakfast and supper. The Duchess began to invite her friends to join her, and before long afternoon tea was established as a private social function across fashionable society.

Today, afternoon tea is enjoyed throughout the world. From traditional afternoon tea to champagne afternoon tea and cream tea, this treasured tradition has never been more popular.

The Hotel Collection Blog: The History of the Sunday Roast

16 May 2017 by Kate

The Hotel Collection commissioned me to write a series of blogs for The Billesley Manor Hotel. This is the second of four blogs, and the theme for this one was the history of the Sunday roast.

Our long-standing love affair with the great British roast can be traced back to 1485 and the reign of King Henry VII. His royal bodyguards would tuck into a hearty roast beef dinner every Sunday after church.

The tradition of eating roast beef on a Sunday eventually spread to the rest of the general population. Back in those days, a Sunday roast was the best meal of the week. The leftovers would be used to make stews and pies, or eaten cold, providing families with enough food for an entire week.

The Hotel Collection Blog: Exercise Tips to Work Off Christmas Dinner

18 December 2016 by Kate

Blog for The Hotel Collection with tips to help work off the Christmas calories.

When you’re tucking into the turkey, mince pies and pudding over Christmas, have you ever wondered how much exercise you need to do to work off your festive feast? Many of us consume more calories than we think through food and drink on Christmas Day alone; back in 2012, BBC Good Food reported the figure to be around 6,000 on average.

According to Government guidelines, the recommended daily calorie intake for men is 2,500kcals, 2,000kcals for women and 1,800kcals for children. To help you avoid starting the New Year worrying about your waistline, we’ve taken a look at some favourite festive foods, and how much exercise it will actually take to burn off those extra calories…

The Hotel Collection Blog: Pumpkin Power

31 October 2016 by Kate

A Halloween-themed blog for The Hotel Collection, about the health benefits of pumpkins.

In the UK, around 12 million pumpkins are grown every year, the majority of which are brought to carve into jack-o’-lanterns for Halloween. This fiery orange fruit, commonly mistaken for a vegetable, is highly edible and super nutritious. Available from October to December, it’s a good source of fibre and packs a powerful punch in the superfood department.

If you’re planning to celebrate Halloween by indulging in some pumpkin carving, don’t let the leftovers go to waste. The bright orange flesh can be used in soups, added to stews, turned into a dip or used to make a nutritious homemade smoothie or even a face mask.
